SAD, SAD PRODUCTION

I’ve seen the play before; this interpretation is awful. Actually, depressing, since it diminished the beautiful music. Choreography fought against the story instead of helping tell it. Pointless pacing, and frantic, unimaginative, movements, almost like being at a rave. And what the devil was that annoying solo female dancer doing interrupting all the numbers? The story suffered from being reduced to a concert. Relationships between the characters and the tenderness of the original was lost. Jesus seemed to be smirking at his followers for much of the play; no hint of divinity. Judas wasn’t bad but his hanging, so impactful in the original, was reduced to simply throwing a mike cord over a rafter. Really? That’s all ya got? And the crucifixtion by power drill felt so small and insignificant in this telling; no powerful contemplation was evoked as it is in the original. Pros: silver hands were cool and Pilot was great. Shudda stayed home and listened to the album.

JUST AWFUL

I’ve seen JCS movie (which is AMAZING) and about 7 different stage productions, including Broadway. I saw this production in New Haven last evening. It was an insult to the original vision. JC in a man bun?? Glitter? Guitars and mic stands? Why?? No drama or emotion portrayed by anyone. Mary was smiling during her songs, Judas screamed. The priests groped their mic stands and danced flamboyantly. It was all so confusing. What was the point of the chaotic lead dancer? the brilliance of JCS is simple set design and this one was over the top with the glitter, glowing crosses and the mic stand/amp for crucifixion. I had to listen to the original soundtrack on my way home to remind myself how good it SHOULD BE.

HORRIBLE

After being a Fox Club Member and season ticket holder for 20 years, this was the worst show I've ever seen. The performers are truly talented, but the production was awful. I left trying to find even one thing, one song or sequence which was valuable. They ruined a classic. This was an embarrassment for the Fox Theater in St. Louis.

THE WORST PERFORMANCE I'VE EVER SEEN AT THE FOX

I absolutely can't believe some of the rave reviews! We have wonderful seats, but could understand almost nothing of the lyrics. The music was so loud that the singers just screeched and screamed. Choreography was jerky and distracting. Staging was poorly lit. If we didn't have seats in the middle of the row, we would have left after the first three numbers. The sound technicians at the Fox always favor the orchestra over the singers but this was one of the worst examples ever. I have seen this musical 5 times before, and never saw such a terrible performance. The songs abruptly changed from one to the next. Even the set design wasn't up to the Fox's usual high standards. I've been a season ticket holder for 10 years, and this was by FAR the worst show I've ever seen. Such a disappointment!

HORRIBLE

Huge Andrew Lloyd Webber and JCS fan, but was thoroughly disappointed. Probably worst show I have seen at the iconic Fox Theatre in St Louis. Singing unintelligible, weak, screaming. Coreography unimaginative, repetitive. No energy. Worst part was we brought our 2 granddaughters and totally built up how great the play they were going to see was. Then were embarrassed.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

The show and choreogrphy seemed sloppy and hastily put together. The meaning of the show was not well-conveyed. The setting remained the same and gave no real connection to the play, other than the large cross on stage which was a poorly used prop. The ending was lackluster. Some good singing. I'm disappointed. I was was so excited to see it until I saw it.

FLAT

It was a major disappointment...I could not stay through the whole performance.. The story was choppy and very hard to follow..The whole thing left me feeling flat..The orchestra was good...but it couldn't make up for the lack of feeling and emotion...Maybe the singers were nervous..The Dancers had great energy but I did not understand the choreography.. I have never left a performance before... Even the opening guitar should have put chills up my spine but the phrasing left me scratching my head...I hope it was an off night and I wish all the cast well and hope they find their groove...
